• With a main interest in the systems, situations, and services people find themselves in, my focus is to find out how we can design new ways of living and working together. Through topics like public space, education, policy making, and business innovation, design is a service that has to rediscover its position in society. A designer has to be a person with the ability to redefine the relations between situations, systems, objects, materials and services in our society. Therefor I responds to what I see, hear and feel, offers solutions, alternatives and sometimes provokes with a comment.

  • The perception of the word mug

The built in system (learned on a very young age) of terms in human understanding of things. What is a MUG, the perception of a cup and the understanding when a thing is a MUG. Is this true usage or shape. Are human really so small of view. The term MUG is used so narrow. So lets see what the term MUG really means. What is the image that fits the word MUG.

When things are damaged, broken and prepared, made from unusual materials, shapes that are not common, strange textures and textile feeling, they usually are ignored. People refuse to get used to them and so they will never be made and in this way changes in perception and usage are slow or not happening at all. Is it fear that keeps people stick to their habits and known things or is it commerce, not willing to take risks.

So what can be understand, interpret as a MUG?
    - The dictionary tells us that a MUG is a small bowl-shaped container for drinking from.
    - Historical the cup orientated from the action of forming your hands into a bowl and later a wooden bowl, evaluated to a constructed form of a bowl by ceramics, metal, glass and plastics.

Through time the understanding of the word cup has shrunk. The term now represents a small, bowl-shaped container for drinking from, typically having a handle and used with a matching saucer for hot drinks. It this true? Or is it the understanding and practice of the MUG that is interpreted in a very narrow way.

    A becomes B
A – A small, bowl-shaped container for drinking from, typically having a handle and used with a matching saucer for hot drinks.
B – A handable container for drinking from, typically having a handle.
On the right you will see the explanation of a mug using the system of the dictionary.
